Taos Regional Airport: A Comprehensive Overview

Introduction

Taos Regional Airport is a public-use airport situated approximately eight nautical miles northwest of Taos’s central business district, in Taos County, New Mexico. Owned by the Town of Taos, the airport primarily serves general aviation needs and is classified as such in the FAA’s National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2009–2013. The airport has two different location identifiers: SKX by the FAA and TSM by the IATA.

Facilities and Runways

The airport spans 832 acres and sits at an elevation of 7,095 feet above sea level. It was inaugurated in March 1967 with a single asphalt runway, 4/22, measuring 5,504 by 75 feet. A second asphalt runway, 13/31, was added in August 2017, measuring 8,600 by 100 feet. Plans are underway for a new 8,000-square-foot terminal building.

Operations and Aircraft

As of April 2022, Taos Regional Airport reported 7,000 aircraft operations for the year, averaging 134 per week. These operations were primarily general aviation (94%), followed by air taxi services (3%) and military flights (3%). The airport is home to 30 based aircraft, including 22 single-engine planes, 2 multi-engine planes, 2 helicopters, and 4 ultralights.

Airlines and Destinations

The airport has seen various airlines operate over the years, with the current provider being Taos Air. The airline offers seasonal flights to several destinations including Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Service was interrupted during the 2020–2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has since resumed.

Historical Airline Service

The airport’s history dates back to 1967 when it was known as Taos Municipal Airport. Over the years, it has been served by several regional and commuter airlines, offering flights to Albuquerque, Denver, Santa Fe, and other locations.

Conclusion

Taos Regional Airport serves as a crucial hub for general aviation and seasonal commercial flights in Taos County, New Mexico. With its two runways and plans for a new terminal, the airport is poised for future growth and development.
